Good, cheap accomodations in NYC?

Mel asked:

I’m looking for a clean, quiet hotel or bed & breakfast in New York City for a few nights at the end of December.

Would like to pay around $100 a night, less if possible.

Doesn’t matter which neighborhood, as long as it’s on the subway line.

Any suggestions?

La Quinta Inn on West 32nd street
The Stanford hotel On West 32nd Street

Both of these hotels are 2 blocks from Macy’s, close to the Empire State Building and the Subway.. Small rooms but affordable.

Check out Hotels.com. They will give you many alternatives and then you can decide where you would prefer to be located in the city- are you driving? If so, you will want to check out parking fees- they are pretty hefty in the city and you cant park on the streets.

I went up to NYC a couple months ago and stayed in the West Side YMCA - rooms are ~$70 for a single, or $40/person for double (both are private rooms with shared bathrooms - it’s well worth the price if you don’t mind that part), it’s in a great neighborhood and location (right between Lincoln center and the park, a couple blocks from the subway), and they even gave us fresh fruit and snacks on the way out the door in the morning. I found it to be very clean and comfortable, and a great deal. You can find this and other budget hotels/hostels on hostelworld.com - there are lots around the city that you could definitely book for under $100, but that’s the only one I’ve had a personal experience with, and I will definitely go back again next time I visit. Also try doing a search on kayak.com to find a good deal - it searches dozens of sites so it picks up hotels you don’t always find on the major search engines. Good luck!

I love B&Bs. There are several really nice ones in New York City that are in great locations. Check out the two sites that I have listed. You may have to search around for you price range, but it’s worth it. Not only will you find great accomodations, but you will get a great breakfast (and sometimes a lunch or dinner) and the owners usually are great sources of tips and information.
