   allocate $125 for gas.

   another $125 for 3 days of renting a car.

   another $125 for 3 nights in a motel.

   food, that’s probably $40/person/day, so that’s around $125.

   Right now you are at $500, with no shopping or souvienir money.

   I agree with paul. If you wanted to try cheaper, try skipping the hotel one night, borrowing a car from someone, and packing your own food. If you drove with minimal delays, you could maybe make it in two days instead of three, but that would barely give you time to breathe
