Good, cheap accomodations in NYC?

Mel asked:

I’m looking for a clean, quiet hotel or bed & breakfast in New York City for a few nights at the end of December.

Would like to pay around $100 a night, less if possible.

Doesn’t matter which neighborhood, as long as it’s on the subway line.

Any suggestions?

Private Places in Hartford Connecticut?

Kleptin A asked:

My girlfriend goes to school in Massachussetts and I go to school in New York. We decided to make Hartford Connecticut a nice weekly meeting place when school is in session since it’s comfortable for commuting.

We’d like to find a nice, private place to be together, not necessarily do anything too sketchy…Are there any big grassy parks or affordable (given the finances of two college students) bed + breakfast places around? Getting a hotel/motel room is either too expensive, tasteless, or both x.x

Much thanks!

What happened to “Drop out and Tune In”"Asking Alice” and the great American Road trip?

mankekineo asked:

A friend is leaving New York City, the “Right Coast” for the “Left Coast” in two weeks, bound for San Clemente, California.I am soooooooo jealous he gets to “Drop Out” and “Tune In”. 40 years ago this was the norm and expected, although with a little help, which would require one to “Go ask Alice”.Ahh, sad, these days we found out that the Great American “Go ask Alice” Experiment Failed.

The 2006 “Drop Out and Tune In” means you enjoy plying the road in a Lexus for a month before you end up and MBA program at Berkeley. If Grace Slick of “Jefferson Starship” sang “Go Ask Alice”….well, different program entirely……

So you get to the ‘Spiritual Alice”, i.e., this Alice, Birkenstock clogged, short, punky hair with chunky blond highlights concealing her grays-she will hand you a granola bar as you pass the Caterpillar, who tuned his mushroom into a vacation condo and will be seen running off, attending his 12 step Hookah anonymous meetings. They had to leave Olde England for Northern California for tax reasons.

The Red Queen took advantage of an early retirement program and now runs a Lesbian Retreat House, called “The Door Knocker”, an ill understood reference to some retro term from a half a century ago, which referred to the brass thing that people used to think would talk back to them as they clunked it on the front door. Poor doorknocker has been relegated to a glass memoirs cabinet, along with a dusty picture of Timothy Leary, the Caterpillars’s old hookah (makes a wonderful vase for fresh cut flowers too), all managed by the Rabbit, who got his MBA in the hospitality business at Northwestern.

Rabbit recently reflected:

“Oh, poor us, we all lost the way with the Turtle Doves at some point and ended up in the retail chain Bed and Breakfast line, not like the old days at all”. “After the red knights refused to work with non organic paint, we had to give up the rose garden for local, indigenous varieties of fauna”. “Red Queen bailed out on stock options.”

is this a good short essay?

carebear asked:

Lengthening the school day

Picture this- the alarm clock goes off and you tumble out of bed. You eat breakfast and get ready for school. This may seem familiar to you, but today something will happen; Today you will have a longer school day. For most students the average year consists of about 180 days and each day consists of about 6 hours. For some students this is already enough school but now people are starting to ponder the idea for longer school days.

In my opinion, I am against the longer school days. My first reason is because by the end of the day kids are dozing off in class. The reason for this is most kids are either bored or tired, so they have a hard time focusing. If we have longer school days, students will have a harder time focusing because of the extra time. Some parents think that by the end of the day we are more focused, but for most students this is the opposite. Since students will not stay focused in classes at the end of the day, the extra time will go to waste.

Next, the longer school days will cost extra money. According to The New York Times article, “And of all the steps school districts take to try to improve student achievement, lengthening the day is generally the costliest- an extra $1,300 a student annually.” Also, teachers and other school staff members would have to stay longer during the school day. This means teachers’ salaries would have to be increased, raising costs even more. For most school districts money for schools is hard to get and the extra time will be another expense. In addition to fund this program taxpayers will have to pay extra money to support the schools.

Last, for most students though getting up early in the morning is hard; if we have longer school days this task will become even harder. This is because for most students we are fitting in our after-school activities, our sports, our homework and our studying which will makes our life even more complicated; and we will be up late trying to finish everything in time. By, working so hard students will become overtired and have a harder time learning and focusing in school.

In conclusion, the next time we her about longer school days we should think, will the longer time really benefit the students? My opinion is no, because students do not need extra time they need their time to be spent being taught by teachers higher quality lessons. Although, we do need to improve the standard testing scores I think we should look for other ways to do this.

Pocket-friendly Bed & Breakfasts: anyone know any good ones?

rosinha asked:

I’m planning to stay for 2 days w/ my hubby in the third week of December, and I’m looking for B&Bs around the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) but preferably along Route 23 in New York State (scenic route). I’ve been using www.bbonline.com but the cheapest I’ve come upon is $100/night. Now, I don’t want the B&B to be so cheap that I’m killing roaches, but I also don’t have loads of $$$$. I’d be ok with anything $50-$100 (at most). Is this wishful thinking, or can it be done? And if you’ve stayed in economical B&Bs, did you have a good experience? Thank you in advance! :)

What is the song I heard a song on the New York R&B radio station 98.7 Kiss FM? It was a telephone number?

Familiar Fling asked:

Ok, I was listening to 98.7 Kiss FM - New York’s R&B radio station the other day. This song came on and I couldn’t remember what it’s called. Let me describe it to you:

I KNOW the title of it is a telephone number, I just can’t remember the numbers. It sounded older. It sounded a lot like Prince’s voice. It was a male lead vocal. The chorus was a telephone number and the last 2 digits he said “ELEVEN”. Like eight six seven, nintety-three eleven or something.

WHAT IS IT?!?! It’s driving me nuts!!!!
